Children's Dentistry in Randolph, NJ

young girl smilingOne of the most enjoyable aspects of what we do at Randolph Dental Associates is providing children's dentistry. Our dental team values the part we play in helping kids of all ages develop a positive attitude about their oral health care.

Dr. Christopher Kaplan provides gentle-touch children's dentistry and has nearly 20 years of experience working in pediatric dental settings. He is skilled in gaining a child's trust by meeting them on their level and making dentistry a fun and positive adventure.

Randolph Pediatric Dentistry

With the ultimate goal of helping children develop lifelong, positive oral habits, we like to see them for their first visit around age one or when the first baby tooth appears.

The goal at this young age is to be proactive in helping kids get used to the idea of dentistry instead of waiting until a problem develops. Each visit with us builds their confidence, and if and when they do need treatment, they will already be a little pro at visiting the dentist.

Why Baby Teeth Are Important

Baby teeth play a crucial role in your child's oral development because they hold a space for permanent teeth. A healthy baby tooth stays in place until the permanent tooth is ready to make an appearance, and when the baby tooth comes out, the permanent tooth takes its place.

If a baby tooth is lost too soon, adjacent teeth can drift toward the open space and start closing the gap. Now there's not enough room for the permanent tooth to emerge in a straight position, and it can come in at an angle that could require orthodontics to straighten.

Dental Exams & Cleanings in Randolph, NJ

Starting with their first dental exam at age one, we will provide preventive treatment throughout for your little one throughout their childhood. The American Association of Pediatric Dentistry recommends dental checkups every six months to stay a step ahead of problems like tooth decay to ensure that their happy little lives aren't interrupted by dental issues.

How We Protect Your Child's Teeth

  • Dental sealants - Teeth like molars and premolars have uneven surfaces with deep grooves that can attract bacteria and cause cavities. A sealant is a thin plastic coating that is floated on the surface of a tooth, then hardened with a curing light. Sealants eventually wear away on their own and need to be replaced.
  • Fluoride applications - Fluoride helps build strong, healthy teeth and prevent new cavities from forming. Many children already receive enough fluoride, but our children's dentist will let you know if he thinks yours would benefit from a supplemental application.
  • Custom mouthguards - All children should wear a mouthguard when playing sports like soccer, football, and basketball, so we offer customized mouthguards for the ultimate protection. We'll be happy to customize one for your budding athlete.

Frequently Asked Questions

Your child should have their first dental visit by age one or when the first baby tooth appears. Dr. Kaplan is very patient and gentle with children of all ages, and their first experience with us is purposefully low-key and fun. This way, we can help build their confidence so that they feel safe and secure with us.

It's also crucial to protect baby teeth, even though they will eventually fall out. These little teeth have a big job to do because they hold space in your child's jaw for permanent teeth to erupt correctly. Loss of even one baby tooth too soon can lead to numerous oral health issues for your child, so keeping them strong and healthy is crucial.

As they grow, we'll start to introduce dental exams and teeth cleanings every six months. If Dr. Kaplan detects an oral health issue that needs our attention, he will use x-rays and photos so you can see what he sees and understand why we recommend treatment.

Another critical part of early childhood dentistry is parent education, and we encourage you to ask any questions you have about their oral health care. We believe it's crucial for parents to understand what to expect at the different stages of their child's dental development. If a problem develops, we can work together as a team, with us providing treatment recommendations and you making confident decisions about your child's dental care.
